Today’s the day. 9 pm Eastern. Trump and Biden meet for their first debate in Atlanta. Biden and two CNN moderators versus Donald J. Trump in the political knockdown, drag out of the week!
You can catch it on CNN or Fox. You can also wait for the follow up coverage all over social media. CNN isn’t allowing livestream reactions. Gee, wonder why?
Yes, that’s dripping sarcasm. Sorry about your shoes. Try white vinegar, cleans sarcasm right up.
Okay, here’s the ‘managing expectations’ part: Biden probably won’t wander offstage and Trump probably won’t have a meltdown. Neither of their staffs would let them within a country mile of the debate stage if they thought for an instant that their candidate would make a fool of himself.
I know, we all have high hopes for Biden but he’s likely not going to claim to have written the Declaration of Independence or anything nearly that funny.
If the campaigns have done their jobs, this is going to be a nice boring train wreck.
Biden has to defend his shambles of a record. Trump has to defend his honor without violating an illegal gag order. This has no chance of being a highbrow, intelligent debate on the issues. Nor is it going to be a cage fight. Both candidates have the same goal – don’t do anything stupid.
Should you watch? Absolutely!
Look, this whole ‘government of the People’ thing means the People have to put on their big boy pants from time to time and listen to the boring stuff their presidential candidates actually say.
Sure, I imagine Trump will get in more than a few zingers and Biden will make at least a dozen gaffs. why would either candidate change who they are now? There will be some interesting moments. If you’re into strategy, the ping pong game will be pretty good.
But mostly, it’s going to be a couple guys talking past each other for ninety minutes. Unless we get really lucky and Biden starts talking gibberish while Trump has a hissy fit.
Don’t count on that.
Really, it’s not what we should want, either. Look, I want Trump to win the general election and I will vote for him but I don’t want to be the kind of person who takes pleasure in watching someone either destroy their career or prove to the world that they have advanced dementia. I’m old enough to dislike Biden for a slew of reasons but that doesn’t mean I should become the kind of jerk that delights in the downfall of someone else.
Don’t become the monster while you’re watching the movie. It’s one debate and it’s much too early to help Biden much even if he nails it. Oh, he needs the win, make no mistake, but this debate won’t make his reelection a done deal. It probably won’t even give him much of a bump and that won’t last long. This movie isn’t worth losing your decency over.
Don’t root for Biden to embarrass himself and don’t rejoice if it does happen. Sure, laugh at the funny parts but don’t become the kind of person that desires the destruction of another person.
Leave that kind of jackassery to the Left.
Grab the popcorn, get comfy and watch what happens. But remember, this is part of the process we use to run this great nation. Don’t give in to the temptation to become the very thing you don’t like about the other guys.
Don’t become the monster.
Hey, don’t forget the butter! It may end up being a boring train wreck but every movie is better with popcorn!
Especially the fun ones! Who knows, we could get lucky!
