It’s easy to complain – heck, it’s almost a national sport because we’re all so good at it! But seriously, it’s so much easier to complain than it is to do something about the problem.
Especially when that problem is political. We’re taught not to talk about politics or religion – as if avoiding the subjects somehow makes them less contentious. If anything, it makes matters worse because inevitably the subjects come up and we are so unused to discussing them civilly that we can barely discuss them at all.
Which just makes sorting out a minor problem into a major headache – and a major problem suddenly seems insurmountable. Might have been netter to talk things out from the start – but you don’t get a do over in politics or relationships – so you have to start from where you are.
Looking at the modern political landscape, I’d rather just pull the covers over my head. I suspect that’s the same with many folks – it’s a disaster area and no one knows where to start.
Well, if not at the beginning start where you are. Talk to people about the issues that concern you – both online and in real life. If it gets heated, back out graciously – but without conceding your beliefs just because the other person is angry. Being the loudest voice doesn’t make someone right.
There’s so much that needs doing – but none of it will happen if we can’t even talk to each other. The first step in regaining our nation is speaking up for what’s right – even when everyone else is yelling that we’re wrong.
It’s easier to curse the darkness but it’s best to light that candle.
