Before you ask, yes, this has to do with American politics and yes, it’s Wednesday. I’m not suggesting for an instant that Putin didn’t order the invasion – of course he did. Russia would have lost a LOT more generals and not in Ukraine had they invaded so much as a Mickey D’s without Putin’s say-so. What I am going to tell you is that events have gotten well away from Putin’s control. From the point of view of his … Continue reading “It Ain’t About Putin”
Why Governmental Politics Matters
Okay, for those of you who are wondering, yes, there are types of politics that don’t involve government. All politics really is is the process of groups of people making decisions. So when you and your friends spend ten minutes deciding between Italian and Chinese, you’ve participated in a political process. But what those idiots in Washington do, that’s different, right? Nah, more power and a lot more rubber chicken, but not really any different at its core. There’s the … Continue reading “Why Governmental Politics Matters”
American Christmas
Oh, come on! You’re not gonna talk about politics at CHRISTMAS?!?!?! Are you trying to ruin it for everyone? Is a discussion of your grandma’s bunions somehow an improvement? Just how many recipes for lemon bars does your cousin have? I can already tell you which team will win whatever game – it’s the one that gets the most points. You’ve already discussed the entire season with your entire family just making the arrangements for who was bringing what and … Continue reading “American Christmas”
Georgia: Why Republicans Hate Their Base
This is actually nothing new. Originally – at least in this party system – the Republicans were the party of the rich, the elite, the businessman and the fiscal conservative. In the Seventies, this began to shift as fewer middle class and virtually the entire South felt betrayed by the heretofore working class/middle class representative Democrats. That bit about the South is included because it is a good object lesson for the modern Republicans. See, Civil Rights as an issue … Continue reading “Georgia: Why Republicans Hate Their Base”
Maricopa County: Why Democrats Cheat
There are polls you never see. These are done on behalf of campaigns. Campaigns spend a WHOLE LOT of money on these polls. That doesn’t mean they don’t have issues because all modern polling has issues, but it does mean they should be far more accurate than the garbage aired on the news each night. These polls are done early and often. They are used to guide the strategic planning of a campaign. That sounds worse than it is; polls … Continue reading “Maricopa County: Why Democrats Cheat”
Giving Thanks
If you are a surviving turkey, I suspect this comes natural this time of year. For the rest of us, it’s easy to get caught up in all the negative things. Stuff that went wrong. Stuff that happened that shouldn’t have. Stuff that didn’t happen that should have. Painful stuff. Bad stuff. Just plain too much stuff. Life can come with some heavy baggage. It’s okay – it’s even a good thing – to cry when we need to, to … Continue reading “Giving Thanks”
Republicans Take Control of the House!
November 17, 2022 The first announcements broke early Wednesday but confirmation reports didn’t come until Wednesday evening. Fox didn’t show the 218 count until this morning. The media covered Trump’s announcement that he is running for president extensively, but barely a whimper about the upset. Oh well, it only took eight days to find out. Isn’t twenty-first century tech great? I decided to delay my post until I had confirmation. I am not yet willing to analyze the midterms mostly … Continue reading “Republicans Take Control of the House!”
And the Winner is… Please Stand By
You’re not going to like my take on the midterms right now. It is too early to analyze the results – or lack thereof – correctly. Therefore, I’m not going to offer an analysis at this time. Once the results are in and events shake out over the next three to four days, I’ll have something to work with and do a reasonable analysis. I know, lots and lots of talking heads are telling you all about the disaster or … Continue reading “And the Winner is… Please Stand By”
Tax Returns and Presidents
The United States Supreme Court stayed a lower court ruling. Happens all the time. This particular stay will keep Congress’ greedy mitts off of Trump’s tax returns for at least another ten days. Yay – why do we care? Well, first off, the premise for Congress’ subpoena keeps changing. At present, the idea is that Congress needs the returns to sort out how to handle presidential tax returns in the future. trouble is, they aren’t asking for any returns but … Continue reading “Tax Returns and Presidents”
Golly, The Polls Might Be Wrong Again?
Gee, how can that be? Okay, okay, less sarcasm, more explanation. There are several major factors and a host of minor ones. We’ll cover the majors. First, most polls aren’t done to actually measure voter preference. This is a feature, not a bug. MSNBC, CNN and FOX just want something to fill the dead space. Polls are quick, cheap and sound like something – without being easily checked. Well, at least most folks don’t know how. Five bajillion percent increase … Continue reading “Golly, The Polls Might Be Wrong Again?”
